Kalk Bay St James : Main Road Rehabilition, Newsletter 16

February 14, 2011

Herewith an extract from the Main Road Rehabilition project’s latest newsletter :

Parking Areas

All City Council parking areas within Kalk Bay will be upgraded during Phase 2 of this project. The project team is waiting on approval to upgrade the remaining parking areas owned by Intersite. Parking areas within Phase 2 are listed below:

  • Parking area south of Kalk Bay Station – owned by the City Council.
  • Parking area opposite Holy Trinity Anglican Church – owned by the City Council.
  • Area adjacent to the southern side of the Holy Trinity Parking area – owned by Intersite.
  • Parking area north of Cape to Cuba and South of Cape to Cuba – owned by Intersite.

During the initial public participation process for Phase 2, it was requested that the Contractor reconstruct all 3 parking areas in the Kalk Bay area within the first 3 months (Jan to March 2011) of Phase 2 (Leighton Road to Kalk Bay Harbour). As such, the contract documentation was prepared accordingly. During subsequent interactions with business owners and other members of the public last year, it was strongly requested that the parking areas preferably be retained for use and reconstructed one at a time within the section in which they fall, so that all the parking areas would not be affected simultaneously.

As such, the parking area opposite the Holy Trinity Church has been closed for reconstruction. Work commenced on 31 January 2011 and is anticipated to continue for the next 3 months. During this time, the entire parking area will be reconstructed therefore no access will be possible. The public should utilise the other parking areas which are available until its completion.
