Kalk Bay, St James Main Rd Rehabilitation : Newsletter 19

July 5, 2011

PHASE 1 CONSTRUCTION (Canty House to Leighton Road)

The anticipated completion date for Phase 1 is now early August 2011.

PHASE 2 CONSTRUCTION (Leighton Road to Kalk Bay Harbour)

Section A: Southbound – Leighton Road to Holy Trinity Church

Construction of this section is further behind programme due to resource issues and is further affected by the delay in completing the rising main connection to Dalebrook sewer pump station.

Section C: Southbound – Holy Trinity Church to Kalk Bay Station

The parking areas at the Brass Bell and Cape to Cuba are progressing well and the asphalt surfacing will be laid when weather permits.

The design of the pedestrian precinct in front of the Kalk Bay station building is being modified at present to incorporate some input received from the ratepayers association. Work will commence once the adjacent parking areas are complete.

Peripheral Projects:

Upgrade of the Ou Kaapse Weg and Steenberg Road intersection to provide an additional right turn lane:

The widening of the slip lanes is underway and should be complete by the first week in July. This is behind programme and is a resource and weather related issue.

An additional lane at the Royal Road / Axminster Road intersection in Muizenberg:

This is complete except for some lane marking on the east side of the intersection and the completion of the signal detector loops. The lane marking has been delayed due to rain. However, since the completion of the widening, there has been a dramatic reduction in the queue length during the evening peak.

HOLIDAY SEASON

Two-way traffic will be reinstated up to the Kalk Bay Station by the end of the year, but in order to achieve this, the current resource issues must be satisfactorily resolved.
